24th December 2008 - Seasons Greetings

Well, that's almost another year over and another hectic one!
It was of course our 25th Year and a landmark for the club.
It also establishes us as one of the longest running clubs in NW England, something of which we are very proud.
It only remains for us to thank everyone who has been involved with the club throughout 2008 and there are far to many to mention, from members to tackle shops, tackle manufacturers, friends, family, sponsors, 'Young Brian' our coach driver, our friends in the media, our local pub for hosting our meetings and supporting our events, as we say the club wouldn't be the club without everyones help, that's why we think of ourselves as a 'community' club, because our local community are the life and blood of the club.

That's it for now, we hope to see you all soon, have a great Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the New Year

21st December 2008 - Christmas Raffle Result

Yesterday evening saw the draw for our Christmas Raffle. On offer this year was a Beer Hamper for 1st prize, a Biscuit Hamper for 2nd prize, and a chocoholic special for 3rd prize.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this year's raffle either with donations or purchasing/selling of tickets, all money goes to our Junior Development Fund which pays for or heavily subsidises any event, matches etc that we hold involving our Juniors.

Santa and his Helpers

Raffle ticket sales this year raised £250 for the fund, so thank you one and all.
As you can see from the photo on the right Santa and his wife made a special trip from Lapland and brought Frosty the snowman's wife along. Frosty couldn't make it he was "snow where to be seen!"

The lucky winners this year are shown below and will be receiving their prizes before Christmas

19th December 2008 - Morrison's 'Bag Pack'

On Wednesday this week (17th) Senior and Junior club members descended on Morrisons store in Warrington to do a 'bag pack'.
Proceeds raised go to our Junior Development Fund which pays or heavily subsidises any events we have that involve our Junior members.
Everyone arrived in time for the 5pm start and packed like crazy until 8pm when the store closed.
The event was a brilliant success and in three hours we raised £438.66p.
We have to say a few 'thank you's'. Firstly to the management and staff of Morrison's for allowing us the opportunity to do a bag pack in the first place, and again on the night when everyone was so helpful. To the customers for being so generous.
Finally to the club members who made the effort to help, they include, Frank Davies, Joe Fagan, Ken Whibley, Mike Lewis, Mike Boden, Mike Davies, Jack Wright, Chris Dolan and Pal, Hannah Rowlands, Dot & Roly, James & John Bryan.

As a token gesture for their efforts, Junior members involved in the bag pack will each receive a free club licence for 2009, and the adults involved will receive a £5 discount off their 2009 licence.

Once again, thanks to everyone involved..

15th September 2008 - Summer League, Cudmore Match - Pool Change

We have had news today from Cudmore that our club match this forthcoming Saturday has had to be moved from the original 'Suez Canal' to 'Brewsters Canal'.
This is unfortunate but necessary as Cudmore advise us that there are water problems with Suez Canal.

Brewsters Canal
Picture & Text Copyright Cudmore Fisheries

The following information can be found on Cudmore website and is courtesy and copyright Cudmore Fisheries:-

This 26 Peg Imitation Canal with approx. 160lb / peg is wider than Suez Canal at approximately 14mtr with an average depth of 5ft.

Fishing is very similar to Suez Canal, with large bags being caught during the summer months on the pole, and with the winter months being very productive especially close in the margins and down the track.
Parking is on the main car park.

What you can fish for: Bream, Carp, Chub & Tench

Access to the Canal: There is good access to all areas of the Canal.

Rules for the Canal:
1) ALL GROUNDBAIT, PELLETS, HEMP MUST BE PURCHASED FROM THE FISHERY
2) BARBLESS HOOKS ONLY.
3) KEEPNETS AT MANAGEMENT’S DISCRETION.

13th September 2008 - POHAS 25th Anniversary Match

For those of you who don't know our club is 25 years old this month.
Yesterday there was a match for the 25 anglers who have attended most matches.
The match was held at Larford Lakes and won by Ian Armstrong with a weight of 92lb 8oz, well done Ian.
Everyone had a great day, although the rain which we didn't expect wasn't too welcome.
Following the match we continued our celebrations in the Black Star Pub in Stourport. Thanks to Jez the landlord for his welcome and very friendly service (plus great ale!). Thanks to Jasmine as well for serving the food.
You can see the motley crew below.

This match doesn't affect any of the leagues as it was a 'one off', however there is a match report which includes all those who fished and the weights, to view the report 'click here'.

There is also a photo gallery which is on the gallery page, 'click here' to view.

8th September 2008 - Brownlee's Pool

Thanks again to all club members for your patience.

4th September 2008 - Whitegate Pool

We are pleased to advise all members that Whitegate Pool re-opens for fishing this Saturday 6th September 2008.
Everyone on the Committee appreciate members patience during the downtime, we are advised by the Environment Agency that it is OK to fish from the above date.

Please Note: Brownlee's Pool is still closed to fishing, we will advise as soon as we know when it can be fished. Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

2nd September 2008 - Brownlee's Pool Closure

When you thought things couldn't get worse, they certainly did yesterday.
We had a phone call from a member who went to Brownlee's early yesterday morning with the intention of fishing, only to find that almost all of the fish were on top gasping for air. The Environment Agency and our Chairman were advised immediately and were soon in attendance at the pool along with some of our club bailiffs.
After testing Oxygen levels the EA Officer advised that the levels were extremely low at 11% and we should close the pool from fishing with immediate effect, which we have, and signs were quickly erected to advise everyone.
With today's rain the Oxygen has gone up slightly to 19%, however fishing is still prohibited. As we said in an earlier report about Whitegate, anyone caught fishing whilst the ban is in place may have their club licence withdrawn.
We have taken advise from the experts and follow their recommendations.
The committee will advise on this website, by word of mouth and by notices on the pools when fishing can recommence.
On this note, we are hopeful that Whitegate will be able to fish soon, and we will advise when this is the case.
We appreciate the patience of all members at this time and ensure you all that our prime concern is the health and wellbeing of the fish.
Looking forward we have had some advise from EA Fishery experts which we hope to implement to lessen the likelihood of events such as this in the future.

28th August 2008 - Whitegate Pool Closure

Important notice to all members that as of today the above pool is closed to fishing until further notice.
A meeting was held on site today involving the Environment Agency, Warrington Borough Council Rangers, Committee Members and Bailiffs.
Due to low water level and a 'fish kill' it is in the best interests that the pool be closed to fishing.

The Junior match due to be held there on Saturday 30th August will now be held at Brownlee's Pool, meet poolside at 9.00am.

We apologise to all members for the inconvenience, we will keep everyone informed as to when Whitegate will re-open for fishing. Should any member be seen fishing these waters whilst the ban is in place, it may lead to the offenders club licence being withdrawn.

Please note that Brownlee's Pool is open as normal.

Matches for the forthcoming Winter League and 2009's Spring, Summer and Junior/Intermediate League dates and venues are now confirmed.

19th August 2008 - Intermediate League 2009

More good news for our Junior members who have or are approaching the age limit for Junior matches.

We are pleased to announce that in 2009 we will once again run an intermediate league. This league will be for members aged from 15 - 18 years of age, and it is a three match series which will be fished on the commercial fisheries listed for the Juniors in 2009, ie, Sycamore, Blundell's Farm and Partridge Lakes.
For those members who are aged between 15 to 16, you will be fishing for two prizes, ie, Junior League and Intermediate, as you will be eligible in both, those who are 17 - 18 will only be eligible for Intermediate League.
Our aim is of course to create a smooth transition from Juniors, into intermediate and hopefully progress to wanting to enter our Senior matches.

We will run through this again at the final Junior match on Whitegate on 30th August and again at our annual prize night on 3rd October at Roosters Club.

19th August 2008 - Winter League 2008 and onwards...

We know that officially we are still in Summer, but time passes quickly and behind the scenes members and committee members have been plotting future matches.

We have announced the dates and venues to give members as much time as possible so as you can plan ahead.
Costings for next year's matches will be confirmed after our AGM in November.

7th July 2008 - It's a POHAS Knockout

At a recent meeting, it was suggested that we have a knockout competition alongside our usual leagues for our adult members.
Based on a standard 16-8-4-2-1 knockout system, our friend and fellow member Phil Clare set about organising the competition.
It started at our last match on Saturday 5th July at Earlswood Reservoir.
If you follow the link below you can see where we are with the competition.
We have set up two competitions, 'comp one' being the original, 'comp two' started with those knocked out from the first round.
There will be prizes for the winners, although as yet unknown!
Thanks to Phil for organising the knockout ladder, click on the image below to see where you are.
For future matches we will add quick links as we do for the reports, photo gallery etc.

10th June 2008 - Browning Club Angler

Here's Neil's second report regarding the Browning Club Angler Competition.

Reporter: Neil Davies
Neil D
Some members have been asking about this contest, so while I was at Cudmore last Saturday for the open match I got an entry form. (By the way I caught 51lb from peg 6 on Pool 1. 61lb won the section, over 100lb won the match from pool 5.)

Anyway, it's the same format as last year, but for those who don't know here goes.

The club can enter up to 10 anglers for each qualifying round. The top ten from each qualifier go through to the final. Each qualifier costs £15 to enter per person, so if you want to fish each of the 3 qualifiers it will cost £45. The dates are as follows.

Round 1 12 July 2008
Round 2 16 August 2008
Round 3 13 Sep 2008.
Final 27 Sep 2008.

Each of the qualifing rounds are to be fished on the New Pools and the final is being held on Arena, venue for this years Fish o Mania final. None of the matches clash with any of our summer matches, although those invited to the 25 year anniversary match will also be fishing on the 12 September as well. So hopefully we can get a good turnout and get some members through to the final.

Anyone wishing to fish can they let Neil know via the forum or the next club match at Blake Hall. It will be first come first served, so once the 10 names are in that's it.

If anyone wants anymore information either drop me a line or check out the details on the Cudmore website.

10th June 2008 - Maver Pairs

Club member Neil Davies has been flirting with the computer keyboard today and submitted two reports, this is the first one rgarding a recent Maver Pairs match.

Reporter: Neil Davies
Neil D
Ian Armstrong and I recently fished a Maver pairs qualifier at Heronbrook Fishery in Staffordshire. The match was fished over 4 lakes with one person fishing either Meadow and Island pools and the other fishing Bridge and the Canal pools. From the draw I fished on Island peg 13 and Ian drew peg 22 on the old canal. Information from local anglers following the draw suggested that Ian had a good peg that could provide a lot of barbel close to the bank. My peg was away from the main Island but had a distinct shallow bar at around 13-14 metres out, which could hold some fish.

My match went as follows, plumbing with a pole rig I found the shallow bar at 14 metres, which was around 1.5 ft shallower than at 13 metres, this would be the main line of attack, as it is most likely that fish will be in the shallower warmer water at this time of year. I also set up rigs to fish in the deeper water at 13 metres, in the margins left and right and a paste swim at 6 metres. I started the match at 14 metres on the pole, but after 20 minutes had to give up due to a strong side wind which made holding the pole and presentation difficult. Due to the wind I decided to set up a leger rod to fish in the same area as the pole swim and hope that a still bait on the bottom would tempt some fish.

Well to cut a long story short I did not catch a single fish, and had only 1 bite on the tip , which I missed. I tried every swim, but could not catch. It was very frustrating, the lake was fishing very badly so any sort of catch could have got me good points.

On to Ians peg. This was situated at one of the corners of the canal, which are usually good pegs. One of the local anglers told Ian that the barbel live in a slightly deeper area of the peg just to the left of the platform at about 4-5 metres from the bank. True enough after careful plumbing of the swim the deeper area was located, by feeding casters, hemp and meat and fishing double caster on the hook he landed 57lb of barbel to 4lb. This weight was good enough for overall 2nd in the match behind England international Sean Ashby.

So due to my poor performance we were unable to qualify for the final. I was dissapointed with my own fishing, but hopefully this summary will highlight a couple of things to people to bear in mind when they go fishing somewhere they are not familar with. Firstly it is important to get as much information as you can before fishing the venue to find out best pegs, baits and tactics etc. Also once at your peg don't just stick to your tried and trusted methods that have worked elsewhere. It is important to plumb the swim carefully to give you a mental picture of the bottom and any depth changes. Ian's peg for example, most people would assume that most fish would be caught on the far bank, however on the day the fish where caught close in. This was only discovered by getting information beforehand and by plumbing the swim correctly.

More details about the match and the fishery, including excellent lake maps with photos of each peg can be found on the Heronbrook website.

7th May 2008 - Garbolino Club Angler 2008 - Special Report

Some members may know that Ian Armstrong, one of our club members entered the above competition.
The Northern qualifier took place at Lindholme Lakes, near Doncaster last Friday 2nd May.

Below you can see a comprehensive report written by Neil Davies who also went along.

101 anglers competed in this match fished over 3 lakes. It had been decided before the draw that the top 3 or 4 from each lake would qualify instead of the overall top 10, as one lake was fishing better than the others and would be unfair to the competitors who would be fishing the other lakes.

Ian drew peg 10 on Laurels Pool, which is situated into a corner. With the sun shining and little breeze, fish could be seen basking near the surface around Ians peg, although a lot of fish appeared affected by fungal growths. On first impressions the draw did not look that good, as it was away from some form pegs. Only the pole was set up and after careful plumbing up around the peg revealed a reasonable depth of up to 6 feet out to 13 metres, close in to the bank along the margins was around 4 foot deep. With this mind and with the favourable weather it was decided that fishing shallow at around 2 feet deep at 11 metres would be the best tactic for the day. Moving out to 13 metres if the fish became wary. As well as this a margin swim was fed with pellets and corn.

The match started at 11am and Ian began fishing maggot on the shallow rig catapulting casters around the float every minute or so. The first fish was a good sized common carp around 3lb, this was followed by several smaller F1'S and roach. The same pattern continued for the rest of the day, a few fish were lost due to foul hooking and bad angling. HA. The margin swim only yielded 3 small F1'S so the fishing was concentrated on the shallow swim.

Looking around the lake during the match other anglers were catching, but not in great numbers or steadily through the day. I had a quick look round the other lakes at around the half way point, and found out that the lakes were not fishing as well as expected. So it was a case of sticking to the plan and making sure that fish were caught at a steady rate.

At the end of the match it looked as though Ian had done well. He was admitting to around 50lb. After a long wait for the scales, Ian's fish were weighed in and he recorded over 76lb in total. A catch of mainly F1 carp, a couple of bigger carp and some silver fish. At that point he was the highest weight on the lake and 3rd overall. After watching the remainder of the lake weigh in Ians catch was the highest weight on Laurels and also held onto 3rd palce overall. The 2 top weights were 93lb and 82lb both from Bonsai lake. That means he has qualified to the 30 peg final to be fished on Barston Lakes on June 13th.

More details including pictures, video clips and interviews will be on the matchfishingmagazine.com website in the next week or so. The match will be covered in detail in the July issue of Match Fishing Magazine which should be on sale on the last Friday in June.

3rd May 2008 - Supercup Round 2

Round 2 of this years 2008 Van Den Eyne/Angling Times Supercup took place today at Brookside Fishery. This time we faced Jacobs AC.

Unfortunately after a close battle we lost. Jacobs had 4 section wins we had 3, and 1 was drawn. Lowest points were required to win, we had 12 points Jacobs AC had 11 points.

It was a sporting match and we wish Jacobs all the best in the Semi Finals which takes place at Lindholme Lakes near Doncaster sometime in June we believe.

I'm sure we will be back in 2009 for another attempt to get past round 2. You can view the match report from either the reports page or for convenience click here.

Finally thanks to Ian and Phil for coordinating this years Supercup and to all the POHAS club members who took part.

Adam and his 13lb+ Carp
Adam and his 6lb Sturgeon

Two club members spent an interesting afternoon/evening fishing at Beacon View Fishery yesterday. John Bryan and Adam Hill had a drive up to Beacon View to get some practice in before our club match there on 17th May.
John spent his time catching small to medium Carp along with some Roach and Tench. As it got towards early evening Adam hauled a 13lb+ Carp (my scales only went to 13lb says Adz) and followed up with a 6lb Sturgeon. The Carp was caught on pellet whilst the Sturgeon was caught on meat.

Lets hope the match is as eventful as the practice! Well done both..

2nd March 2008 - Supercup Round 1

The first round of the Angling Times Supercup was our mission yesterday and we were up against worthy opponents, Richmonds and Saracens Head.
Three teams of eight fought it out on Lark Pool at Meadow View Fishery, Lymm.
The weather forecast wasn't good, however the rain that was promised held off by the strong winds that were blowing across the pool.
Several anglers had sections break on their poles through the gusty wind conditions. Many of those fishing preferred to use the rod.
The match fished from 10.30 to 3.30 and the weigh-in was a tense affair.
After totalling the points up there were two teams equal on 15 points.....we were one of them! So the final decision was taken on section wins, we had four which clinched it for us - POHAS GO THROUGH TO ROUND 2.

Congratulations to our team (see picture below), well done, especially our section winners who were, Ian Armstrong, Bill O'Keefe, Paul Rowlands and Neil Turner. Top marks for Neil T, as he also won the match with 26lb+.

Can we also thank our opponents Richmonds and Saracens Head for a fair and friendly match.

All we have to do is sit and wait to see who we get in round two, and who gets the home draw.
As soon as we know, it will be posted on the website.

Thanks to Junior Papperazzi John Bryan for taking the photo's below, Senior Papperazzi was at home on other duties!
